IoT Day: Regional Safety, Sustainability and Security

We often talk about SmartCities, but this focuses on technologies. We need to focus on people. Also, Cities don’t exist in isolation. The issues that cities need to address rarely end at the boundary of the city and the problems that cities need to solve don’t always originate within the boundaries of the city. We need to take a regional perspective.

These regions, the geographic or Geopolitical area in which the city exists, are incredibly complex systems. We can’t just focus on that system though, we need to look at the regional ecosystem — the flow of energy, ideas, things and people throughout the region. We need to look at the people who live in the city, work in the city, and visit the city on a regular or occasional basis. When we consider technologies such as advanced analytics and machine learning from Internet of Things data, we need to understand the cultural, regulatory, economic, political and environmental factors that allow us to use these technologies for good. The theme of this year’s IoT Day.

Today, we are focusing on safety, security and sustainability within these ecosystems. While each of these areas can be addressed separately, we need to look at how these three areas interact, how they might interfere with each other, and how we might leverage the solutions in one area to enhance another area. This panel has come together to address two areas of safety, two areas of sustainability, and how these work together to enhance the security of the region.
